SUMMARY

This article provides detailed information and screen shots regarding printer Properties in Windows XP/2000/NT4.

WINDOWS XP/2000 Printer Properties

In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the printer Properties windows have the same basic options and settings for all brands and models of printers. Certain types of printers may have additional settings not available for all printers (e.g., color settings would not be available for a black and white printer). However, most of the options and settings used in conjunction with STI software can be found on one of two main tabs of the printer Properties window:  the Advanced tab and the Ports tab.

The settings on the Advanced tab are similar to those on the Details tab of the printer Properties window in Windows Me/98/95. Print spooling options and the print driver can be configured here.

The Ports tab allows you to determine which printer port connects the workstation to the selected printer, and select a different port if desired. The settings on the Ports tab are similar to those found on the Details tab of the printer Properties window in Windows Me, Windows 98 and Windows 95.

Windows NT4 Printer Properties

In Windows NT4, there are three tabs in the printer Properties window that contain the same basic options and settings as those that are found on the Details tab of printer Properties windows in the Windows Me/98/95 operating system.

The General tab contains the print driver information, and on it a new driver can be selected.

The settings on the Scheduling tab include the Spool settings that would be found on the Details tab of printer Properties in Windows Me/98/95.

The Ports tab in Windows NT4 (not shown) is identical to the Ports tab in Windows XP/2000. On this tab are the settings that control which printer port connects the workstation to the selected printer.
