SUMMARY

This article discusses what computer system user rights are needed in order to install and use Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software as well as the issues that arise if you do not have certain rights.

REQUIRED RIGHTS

The following table illustrates the level and type of rights required for certain functions.

Function Rights Required
Administrator (Workstation) Rights to Edit Registry All Rights to Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Program & Data Folders Rights to Workstation's Windows Folder
Installing Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Systems Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4 checkmark   checkmark
Starting PracticeMaster Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4   checkmark
Using Any Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software     checkmark checkmark
Spell Checking Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4 (Version 10 software only) checkmark

RESULTS OF INSUFFICIENT RIGHTS

The following scenarios describe the results of performing the functions listed in the table above without having the specified rights.

Installing Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4

Attempting to install Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software from the CD-ROM or run SETUP.EXE from the program folder on the server at a Windows 2000/XP/NT4 workstation, requires administrator rights to the workstation. If you do not have sufficient rights, the installation will abort with the message "Error Extracting Support Files - Access Denied". KB Article R10705, Issues Running Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software Under Windows 2000/XP, has additional information about this error.

Installing the software also requires full rights to the folder into which the software is being installed. If you do not have full rights to this folder, the installation may abort since it cannot create new files in the target folder or copy files to the target folder.

Spell Checking Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4

The Spell Checker software used by Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Version 10 software assumes that the user has administrator privileges on the workstation. If the user does not have administrator privileges, the Spell Checker is unable to load the main lexicon (dictionary) data file. As a result, the Spell Checker will stop on nearly every word in the text being spell checked, flagging each as if it were incorrectly spelled.

There is an alternative to providing the user with administrator rights on the workstation. However, the alternative requires editing the workstation's registry, which should only be done by a qualified computer technician. KB Article R10101, Using Spell Checker Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4, has additional information regarding this issue.

Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Version 11 software uses a newer version of the Spell Checker software that does not have these restrictions.

Starting PracticeMaster Under Windows 2000/XP/NT4

When PracticeMaster is opened, it attempts to write to the workstation's registry. If you do not have rights to modify the registry, the message "Failed to update system registry, you must use regedit" is displayed. To prevent this message from appearing every time PracticeMaster is started on a Windows 2000/XP/NT4 workstation, you must be provided with sufficient rights to edit the registry.

Using Any Tabs3 and PracticeMaster Software

Using any Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software requires full rights to the folders in which the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software is installed and any folders in which the Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software stores data. This is because certain functions in the software may create, copy, rename, modify and/or delete existing files. If you do not have sufficient rights, there are a variety of fatal errors and other issues that may occur as a result.

Using Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software also requires that you have rights to create and modify files in the Windows folder on the workstation (i.e., the folder in which the workstation's operating system is installed). The software uses a configuration settings file called STI.INI, located in the Windows folder. Information such as printer margins and settings, the last printer used in Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software, the last client used, certain preferences, etc., is stored in the STI.INI file. Each time a change is made to one of the settings in the STI.INI file, the file is updated automatically. (Note:  Certain settings are not saved until the the software is closed). If the STI.INI file does not exist in the Windows folder when a Tabs3 and PracticeMaster application is started, the application creates the file. If you do not have sufficient rights to create or modify files in the Windows folder, certain important settings will not be saved.
