SUMMARY

This article addresses the question of how to write a single check from the trust bank account on behalf of multiple trust accounts.

MORE INFORMATION

From time to time, it may be desirable to write a single check from the trust bank account, on behalf of more than one trust account, to a common payee. For example, if there are multiple trust accounts making payments to your firm at the same time, you can save blank checks by using only one check to transfer the funds from the trust bank account to your firm's operating account.

Enter a manual check transaction with the same check number for each trust account. This requires you to write the single check to the payee manually rather than having TAS print it.

To write a check from multiple trust accounts to a single payee

  1. Enter a separate manual check transaction for each trust account contributing to this payment.

  2. During TAS Bank Account Reconciliation, the check will appear multiple times with various amounts specified (i.e., once for each contributing trust account). On your bank statement, the check will only appear once for the total amount. Because each of the related entries in TAS Bank Account Reconciliation has the same check number, marking any one of the records as reconciled will mark them all as reconciled simultaneously.
