You must be an Administrative or Standard User with User Account Control and elevation enabled to install/uninstall the PracticeMaster Outlook Plug-in, Word Plug-in, and the HotDocs Plug-in.

The current version of the software will prompt you for the required credentials before performing this task if you are an Administrative User or a Standard User with UAC and elevation enabled. A Standard User with UAC disabled will not have the option to elevate the program with administrative credentials, and therefore will not be able to install/uninstall the Outlook, Word, or HotDocs Plug-ins. Detailed information regarding how program elevation works in Windows Vista is provided in the Program Elevation section.

Note:  To install integration plug-ins, PracticeMaster software Version 14 and prior must be elevated when opening the software by right-clicking the program icon and selecting Run as Administrator. You will be asked to provide administrative credentials before continuing. If PracticeMaster is not run as an administrator at startup, no PracticeMaster integration plug-ins will be allowed to install. This only needs to be done when installing/uninstalling integration plug-ins.

WORD 2007 and HotDocs

HotDocs 2008 and 2007 are now supported for use with Windows Vista. Word 2007 requires HotDocs 2007 Service Pack 1 or HotDocs 2008. HotDocs 2007 SP1 and HotDocs 2008 are fully compatible with PracticeMaster Versions 14.3 and later.

Our testing indicates that Windows Vista appears to be compatible with HotDocs 2006 SP1; however HotDocs 2006 does not support Word 2007.

When attempting to assemble or edit a HotDocs template with a version of HotDocs that does not support Word 2007, you will receive a message stating, "You are using a version of Microsoft Word not supported by HotDocs."

The HotDocs Knowledge Base, http://support.hotdocs.com/knowledgebase, includes the article "File Locations and Supported Word Processors", which details their compatibility requirements.

Outlook Express is Now Called Windows Mail

Windows Mail was released with Vista as the next version of Outlook Express. The initial release did not work with PracticeMaster E-mail, so a Hotfix was released by Microsoft in August 2007. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 includes this Hotfix, which allows integration to work as it had with Outlook Express. Information regarding the current Hotfix can be found in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 939718.

Outlook 2007

We are currently unaware of any issues related to running the PracticeMaster Outlook Calendar/Contact Synchronization or E-mail Integration with Outlook 2007.

Note: If you are unable to see the PracticeMaster toolbar when sending new e-mails using Outlook 2007, see R11423, "PracticeMaster Toolbar Missing from Outlook".

Word 2007

The Word 2007 default file extensions for document templates and documents are *.dotx and *.docx respectively as opposed to the previous *.dot and *.doc file extensions. Word 2007 also features *.dotm and *.docm file extensions for macro-enabled document templates and documents. Testing of PracticeMaster Word Document Assembly indicates that our Word Document Assembly is compatible with the new file formats.

If desired, users can configure Word 2007 to default to the *.dot and *.doc file formats using the following procedures:

  1. Click the Microsoft Office Button. The Microsoft Office Button Office 2007 Word button replaces the File menu and is located in the upper-left corner of all Microsoft Office 2007 programs.
  2. Click the Word Options button.
  3. Click Save in the left pane.
  4. In the Save Document section, click the Save files in this format drop-down list.
  5. Select Word 97-2003 Documents (*.doc) or Word 97-2003 Template (*.dot)
  6. Click OK.

It is important to be aware that many of the settings and options in Word are accessed differently than in previous versions of Word. For example, in Word 2003 and earlier, File Locations was accessed via Tools | Options | File Locations. However, in Word 2007 it is accessed via Microsoft Office Button | Word Options | Advanced | General section | File Locations

The PracticeMaster Toolbar used for creating Word Document Assembly templates is also located in a different position than in previous versions of Word. When creating, viewing, or editing a template, the PracticeMaster Toolbar can now be found in the Add-Ins group of the Word 2007 Ribbon at the top of the screen.

Vista Compatibility Issues

The following is a list of known compatibility issues we have found regarding Tabs3 and PracticeMaster software.

PracticeMaster: Program Elevation

When integrating PracticeMaster and Outlook, if the first program opened is in an elevated state, then the second must be opened in an elevated state as well. If the first program is opened in an elevated state, but the second is not opened in an elevated state, PracticeMaster will not be able to poll your e-mail. This issue occurs because objects created by an Administrator user cannot be shared with the Standard user. To avoid this situation, either run both programs with the same elevation status, or be sure to open the first program in a not elevated state. It is not necessary to run either program in an elevated state, because elevation is called on an "as-needed" basis within the PracticeMaster software.

Note:  PracticeMaster Version 14 and prior must be elevated when opening the software by right-clicking the program icon and selecting Run as Administrator. If PracticeMaster is not run as an administrator, no PracticeMaster integration plug-ins will be allowed to install. After installing the PracticeMaster integration plug-ins, you will need to restart PracticeMaster without elevation, or open Outlook with elevation, otherwise integration will not be allowed.

PracticeMaster: Required Rights for Installing/Uninstalling Plug-ins

Administrator rights are required when attempting to install or uninstall the PracticeMaster integration toolbar plug-ins on a Windows Vista machine (e.g., the Outlook, HotDocs, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Word toolbar plug-ins). This is because Administrator rights are required for a user to edit the computer's Windows registry, and each of these plug-ins requires a registry setting to be edited. At minimum, these functions require you to log in as a Standard user with UAC Enabled to allow the option for elevation. A Standard user with UAC Disabled will not have the option for elevation to Administrator rights.

In the current version of PracticeMaster, if you are an administrative or standard user with UAC Enabled, you will be prompted to provide administrative credentials before installing or uninstalling the PracticeMaster integration plug-ins. A UAC shield icon will denote when administrative credentials are required.

In Version 14.3 and prior, the elevation required to install/uninstall plug-ins is necessary before starting the software. This is because in these versions, there is no access point in the software to gain elevated status. (Note: To install the Word plug-in for all users, you must be logged in as an Administrator user. The Microsoft Word toolbar plug-in cannot be installed for the Standard user when logged in as a Standard user with UAC Enabled. Installing the Word plug-in under this setting will only install the Word plug-in for the Administrator user.)
