Summary
PracticeMaster features integration with CompuLaw's Rules Engine for generating Calendar Plans based on court rules. This article provides troubleshooting information to assist you if you have problems with CompuLaw integration.
Version Note: The PracticeMaster Version 15.3 update provides the ability to
integrate PracticeMaster with CompuLaw Version 10 as well as other features.
PracticeMaster Version 15.2 and earlier only integrates with CompuLaw Version 9. Complete
information regarding the CompuLaw conversion can be found in KB Article R11303,

Error Messages
- "CompuLaw is not installed in <path>."
- This error occurs if PracticeMaster cannot find the required CompuLaw
library file, CLAWDCE.DLL.
- Verify PracticeMaster Version 15.3 is installed. In PracticeMaster,
select Help | About. PracticeMaster Version 15.3 is needed in
order to integrate with CompuLaw Version 10.
- Verify CompuLaw Version 10 is installed in PracticeMaster's current
working directory. In PracticeMaster, select Help | About. In the
middle section, scroll down to the Integrating with CompuLaw
line. This entry will be set to "Yes" if the CLAWDCE.DLL file is found
in PracticeMaster's current working directory. If it is not found,
reinstall CompuLaw to correct this issue.
- "Error 126 loading CompuLaw Date Engine (CLAWDCE.DLL)"
- This error occurs if PracticeMaster cannot find the required CompuLaw
Date Engine program files. Refer to KB Article R10890, "CompuLaw Installation Instructions", for instructions on making sure CompuLaw is installed correctly in the PracticeMaster
working directory.
- "CompuLaw is not enabled for User ID <user>.
Cannot process plan."
- In the Calendar file, you can click the Action button and select
Create CompuLaw Plan (or right-click the record and select Action |
Create CompuLaw Plan) to access the Generate CompuLaw Dates program. When you do this, several of the fields in the Generate CompuLaw Dates dialog are filled in automatically with information from the selected calendar record. However, if the calendar record includes one or more User IDs that do not have the
CompuLaw check box selected in System Configuration, this
message will be displayed.
To correct this, edit the User/Group field so that only User IDs that have CompuLaw integration enabled are selected. Or, access the User Configuration program in System Configuration (File |
Open | Users) and select the CompuLaw check box for each User ID selected in the calendar record that you want to use to create a CompuLaw Calendar Plan. Keep in mind that this check box can only be selected for a certain number of User IDs concurrently, based on your CompuLaw license.
- "No users are configured for CompuLaw integration."
- This message appears when attempting to access the Generate CompuLaw Dates program if the
CompuLaw check box is not selected for any of the User IDs configured in System Configuration. Only User IDs with this check box selected can have calendar records created using Generate CompuLaw Dates. Therefore, if no User IDs are configured for CompuLaw integration, the Generate CompuLaw Dates program cannot be accessed.
To correct this, select the CompuLaw check box for one or more User IDs in the System Configuration User Configuration program (File |
Open | Users). Keep in mind that this check box can only be selected for a certain number of User IDs concurrently, based on your CompuLaw license.
- "GroupInfo: CompuLaw records may be assigned to CompuLaw users only."
- This message occurs when attempting to save a calendar record for a User ID that does not currently have the
CompuLaw check box selected in System Configuration. This can happen if you are editing an existing calendar record that was originally created using Generate CompuLaw Dates, and one or more User IDs selected in the
User/Group field are not configured for CompuLaw integration.
To correct this, you must either select the CompuLaw check box for the User ID(s) in System Configuration, or specify different User IDs for which CompuLaw integration
is enabled.
- "Cannot disable users with existing CompuLaw records."
- This message can occur when attempting to save a user record in System Configuration's User Configuration program after clearing the
CompuLaw check box for the User ID. The message indicates that the User ID still has PracticeMaster calendar records dated on or later than the current date that were created using Generate CompuLaw Dates. If you need to clear the
CompuLaw check box for the User ID, you must first delete those calendar records or assign them to other User IDs for which the
CompuLaw check box is selected. Records can be reassigned manually, or using the Reassign User ID program in System Configuration.
- "Cannot delete users with existing CompuLaw records."
- This message can occur when deleting a User ID in System Configuration. The message indicates that there are one or more PracticeMaster calendar records dated on or later than the current date that were created using Generate CompuLaw Dates. One way to correct this is to select the
Inactive check box for the User ID rather than deleting the User ID. For more information on the benefits and drawbacks of deleting users versus making users inactive, see KB Article
R10840, "Deleting User IDs".
However, if you need to select the
CompuLaw check box for another User ID and you have reached the limit of users permitted by your CompuLaw license, you must clear the
CompuLaw check box rather than deleting the user or making the user inactive. Before you can clear the
CompuLaw check box, you will have to delete or reassign all calendar records for the user that were created using Generate CompuLaw Dates and are dated on or later than the current date. This can be accomplished using the Reassign User ID program in System Configuration.
- "You are using an unregistered copy of the CompuLaw CRD engine."
- This message indicates that the Security Code provided to your firm by CompuLaw has not been entered into the Security Code Entry form. The Security Code is located on the
Product Security Code Sheet that CompuLaw sent when they received your Court Rule License Agreement.
To enter the Security Code, start the CRD Security Code program located in the program group where the CompuLaw Rules Engine is installed. Upon starting the program, the Security Code Entry form will be displayed. Enter the firm name and security codes into the proper fields and click
Save.
Note: Make sure that PracticeMaster is not running before beginning this procedure.
- "CRD engine incorrect user count."
- This message can occur when configuring a User ID in System
Configuration to have CompuLaw integration. This indicates that there are not enough CompuLaw licenses
installed for the users currently trying to access the program. In
order to correct this, review what users are currently integrated with
CompuLaw and compare this to your current CompuLaw user limit. If you
need additional CompuLaw users, contact the reseller from which you
purchased PracticeMaster, or our Sales Department, to upgrade your
CompuLaw user limit.
- "Unable to Connect to the CompuLaw Database."
- This message occurs when the workstation or file server cannot connect to the SQL
Server. This can be caused by a missing or invalid COMPULAW.INI file in
the PracticeMaster current working directory, or the SQL Server is not
accessible or incorrectly configured. If this message is intermittent,
there may be a network communication problem. However, if this message
is recurring, this is likely a configuration issue.
It may also be necessary to check the firewall and
permission settings for the server to ensure that all users who use PracticeMaster have full access to the SQL Server and CompuLaw files.

444-0215.
- "In order to use <taskname>, CompuLaw Version 10 must be installed."
- This message indicates that the CompuLaw Version 10 engine (CLAWDCE.DLL)
cannot be loaded, but PracticeMaster found an older version
(CRDENG32.DLL) in the PracticeMaster working directory. To correct this,
install CompuLaw Version 10 and convert the existing Rule Sets to an SQL
database. Complete information regarding the CompuLaw conversion can be found in KB Article
R11303,
"PracticeMaster Version 15.3 Conversion Information for CompuLaw".
- "PracticeMaster must update your existing calendar plans to work with
CompuLaw Version 10. CompuLaw Date Maintenance will not be available
until the update has been run. Click OK to start the update or click
Cancel to perform the update later."
- This message indicates CompuLaw Version 10 is installed, but rules
created using an earlier version of the CompuLaw Rules engine may still
exist in PracticeMaster.
In order to convert, a user with manager access
rights must log into PracticeMaster and click OK to proceed. A conversion
will begin, updating all Calendar Plans created with CompuLaw to the new
version. Complete information regarding the CompuLaw conversion can be found in KB Article
R11303,
"PracticeMaster Version 15.3 Conversion Information for CompuLaw".
- "Access is Denied."
- This message can be displayed immediately following the previous one ("PracticeMaster
must update..."), or when attempting to access the CompuLaw Date Maintenance
or Generate CompuLaw Dates programs for the first time after updating to
Version 15.3.
To correct this message when it follows the above "PracticeMaster must update..." message,
this is because a user without manager access rights is attempting to run
the conversion. A manager must start PracticeMaster and click OK to
proceed.
To correct this message when it is displayed when accessing CompuLaw Date
Maintenance or Generate CompuLaw Dates, a small update to the calendar plans
must be performed due to the CompuLaw Version 10 conversion. A user with
access rights to Process Calendar Plans must access one of these programs
first, which will automatically begin the update. Once it is complete, any
user with CompuLaw rights can access these programs.
Complete information
regarding the CompuLaw conversion can be found in KB Article
R11303,
"PracticeMaster Version 15.3 Conversion Information for CompuLaw".
- Error locating the Rule Set Selection Expert file "jse.txt".
Please contact CompuLaw for assistance.
- This message occurs when selecting a CompuLaw Jurisdiction
in the Generate CompuLaw Dates program and the file cannot be found.
Please contact CompuLaw for assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What happens if I change the dates for CompuLaw calendar records in
PracticeMaster?
- Once a CompuLaw calendar record is changed manually in PracticeMaster, the
date relationship is severed and subsequent changes to the record will no longer
automatically adjust linked records or dependent items. This behavior is by
design. If the date of a calendar item that has dependent items is changed
in PracticeMaster manually or by using the Combine function, that calendar record will no longer
be affected by any future use of the Combine function or the CompuLaw Date
Maintenance utility. Although any dependent items will be adjusted the first
time an item is manually changed, subsequent changes will not adjust the
dependent items. If a calendar item with dependent items is changed a subsequent
time, the message "Dependent dates will not be changed." will be displayed indicating the dependent dates will not be
changed. If it becomes necessary to change the date of a CompuLaw plan item that
has dependent items a subsequent time, it is recommended that you instead delete
the item (which also deletes the dependent items) and recreate it using the
Generate CompuLaw Dates program. Otherwise, if changes are made to the Rule Set
on which the Calendar Plan is based, the CompuLaw Date Maintenance utility will
be unable to modify the existing plan items.
- How can I remove
and assign access for users to Generate CompuLaw Dates?
- Access the User Configuration program in System Configuration (File |
Open | Users) and select the Allow CompuLaw Dates
to be generated for this user in PracticeMaster check box for each
CompuLaw user. Keep in mind that this check box can only be selected for the
number of User IDs for which you have CompuLaw licenses.
